Recently, I read an article that described Berat as one of the rare places offering an indescribable sense of calm and peace and it stuck with me. The moment you step into this city as a tourist you will feel it!
Berat is a testament to Albanian architecture. The old town is protected by UNESCO. It beautifully blends eastern and western cultures, traditions, and customs. The city is a treasure trove of Albanian history and exemplifies the harmony between faith and culture.
In Berat, people possess a profound, spiritual healing energy. Today, within the city walls, there are still individuals who do not believe in illness, making this place truly unique and authentic.
Discover Berat Castle (Kala)
This fortress, built in the 13th century, is special because people still live there.
Activities Within the Castle
Inside the castle, families can explore the museum and the beautiful churches, walk along the cobblestone streets that make it feel like home. You can take a break for coffee or enjoy a meal as the sun sets. In this historic place, every moment is valuable.
Stroll along Bulevardi Republika
Each evening, the town engages in the xhiro—a traditional sunset walk. It's an ideal time for children to play safely and for solo travelers to disconnect and mingle.
Embark on an exciting journey through the Gorica Bridge
This iconic stone bridge links the two historic parts of the city and provides the best view of the stacked Ottoman windows. There is a nice coctail bar and amazing traditional food.
Please feel free to ask our Hosts at Le Mom' to provide suggestions based on what you would like more to do.
What to Eat: Traditional Albanian Cuisine
Albanian cuisine is fresh, influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and includes vegetarian options available. Berat is renowned for its olives and olive oil. There are opportunities for wine tasting and olive oil experiences, and at Le Mom', we can recommend places where you can dine like a local.
Some food suggestions but we will come later with a full blog on this:
Tavë Kosi: A comforting baked dish featuring tender lamb, rice, and seasoned yogurt.
Byrek: A flaky pastry filled with cheese or spinach, ideal for quick, affordable lunches.
Trileçe: A soft, ultra-sweet cake made with three types of milk, loved by both children and adults.
